12.00 THE IMPORTANCE OF INTER-CULTURAL SENSITIVITY IN LANGUAGE LEARNING
Michael Carrier, Executive Director of International House World Organisation, talks about the importance of inter-cultural sensitivity in language learning.
Many students are learning English not so they can go to UK or US, but so they can work with international colleagues and contacts. Thus, they need to learn not only about UK or US Culture, but also develop an international cross-cultural sensitivity and understanding along with their language skills.
Culture in the language classroom is not a matter of discussing US landmarks or UK history. To be a successful communicator in English in an international context, learners need to be aware of a broad range of cultural issues, references and knowledge.
It is important to distinguish, and teach learners to distinguish, the different issues of cultural reference (in texts and authentic learning materials), cultural awareness of the English-speaking countries, cultural literacy within language contexts, and inter-cultural sensitivity towards interlocutors from any cultural background.
This talk outlines some of the theories about culture and what constitutes inter-cultural awareness. It outlines what sorts of cultural input or activities we can bring to our learners to enhance their language learning.

L’intervento prende spunto dall’esperienza di corsi di formazione per insegnanti delle scuole statali di ogni livello. La presenza sempre più numerosa di alunni stranieri in classe e nel sostegno fuori classe presenta difficoltà che richiedono competenze specifiche da parte degli insegnanti. E’ quindi opportuno suggerire soluzioni e strumenti concreti a partire da presentazione e discussione dei vari approcci all’insegnamento (metodologia comunicativa, ludica, cooperative learning ecc.), creazione di materiale didattico efficace, facilitazione dei testi curriculari. Parallelamente, sviluppare la sensibilità interculturale e fornire indicazioni per l’attuazione di progetti interculturali in ambito scolastico.

For most teachers dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADD, ADHD and other learning or behavioural disorders present a challenge. Identifying the problem can be difficult enough as the same symptoms can be found across the spectrum. Whatever the problem, the difficulty manifests itself both in the acquisition of the 4 skills and in the ability to reason. This can affect not only the learners themselves, but also the more able students in the classroom and, ultimately, the teacher too. This talk explores ideas and activities that will turn learning into a positive experience for all and will hopefully redress some of the concerns that teachers have.

14.30-15.00 Nick Beer, Cambridge ESOL Italia, introduces the new computer-based tests from cambridge ESOL.
There are computer based alternatives for a growing number of Cambridge ESOL exams, including KET, PET, BEC and TKT, delivered through a network of over 20
centres throughout Italy. Feedback from candidates has been very positive and more exams will be available in a computer based format during the coming months..
This presentation will show how these exams work and outline the advantages for both teachers and candidates.

In questo breve intervento vorrei presentare la mia esperienza di CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning)che ho deciso di attuare in via sperimentale nella mia classe di 5° liceo scientifico. Tale esperienza è consistita nel presentare un’unità didattica di Fisica in lingua inglese, utilizzando un capitolo tratto da un testo americano (Physics for Scientists and Engeneers by Serway Jawett) utilizzato nelle facoltà scientifiche presso AUC (American University of Cairo).
L’argomento sviluppato in nove lezioni, che quindi hanno occupato poco meno di un mese scolastico, ha trattato il Campo Magnetico, in particolare il campo magnetico e le linee di forza, il campo magnetico terrestre, la forza magnetica agente su un filo percorso da corrente, il momento magnetico in una spira percorsa da corrente, il movimento di una particella carica in un campo magnetico uniforme e relative applicazioni.
La valutazione, avvenuta tramite uno scritto (interamente in inglese) che comprendeva sia problemi aperti, sia problemi a risposta multipla, ha dato un esito molto positivo (85% di sufficienze). Ritengo che l’esperienza sia stata complessivamente positiva e abbia offerto agli studenti un’occasione per acquisire competenze linguistiche (linguaggio scientifico) che una normale lezione di inglese non può dare, e forse questo è un passo avanti per cercare di “utilizzare le lingue per imparare a imparare a usare le lingue” che è il motto che sta alla base del CLIL.
Laura Bianchi - 10 Reasons for taking the KET
Partendo da una pluriennale esperienza di preparazione di studenti di scuola media all'esame KET, in questo intervento si pongono in evidenza i risvolti positivi di questo sfida sia per l'insegnante che per l' allievo.
Mentre per l’insegnante preparare gli allievi a sostenere il KET si traduce in una opportunità per aggiornarsi e per avere un riscontro oggettivo del proprio metodo di insegnamento, per l’allievo sostenere il KET rappresenta una prima occasione di confronto della propria preparazione con sistemi di valutazione a livello internazionale, perciò esterni al microcosmo scolastico.

Julie Wallis
I have always enjoyed working with people, and I enjoy drawing on my creative and practical skills in order to present and plan lively, active task-based learning activities that meet the learners’ needs. Being the mother of a 13 year old with a relatively unknown learning disorder (dyspraxia) and a teacher at ‘scuola media’ myself has led me to research teaching ideas for children with both learning and behavioural disorders. I wouldn’t pretend to call myself an expert, rather someone who has had to learn to cope in the unknown world of learning difficulties.
Alessandra Latino ha insegnato italiano agli stranieri in Italia, presso International House Milano, e all’estero. E’ esaminatrice orale per gli esami CELI (Certificazione Europea – università di Perugina), si occupa della formazione di insegnanti di italiano L2 e di insegnanti delle scuole statali. E’autrice di libri di testo per l’insegnamento dell’italiano come L2.
Tim Priesack, ex console britannico a Torino e membro fondatore di AISLi, autore di numerosi testi scolastici di lingua inglese, pubblicati in Italia e all’Estero. Ha insegnato per lungo tempo, ha gestito una scuola e si è occupato di metodologia dell’insegnamento. Da diversi anni collabora, in qualità di responsabile editoriale, con LANG/Pearson Longman
Michael Carrier is Chief Executive of the International House World Organisation, based in London, a network of over 140 schools in 46 countries worldwide.
He has been involved in ELT for over 30 years as a teacher, trainer, author and school director. He has worked in Germany, Italy, Poland, UK and the USA, and lectured in many other countries.
He has written a number of ELT coursebooks and skills books, including the Break into English series, Front Page series, Business Circles, Intermediate Writing Skills and Spotlight Readers.
His special field of interest is the application of technology to Language Teaching, and he is the Editor of the Technology section of the Modern English Teacher (MET) journal.
Marta Montanini, nata a Milano il 28/7/1963, dopo aver frequentato il liceo scientifico di San Donato ottenendo la Maturità a pieni voti nel 1982, si laurea in Matematica all’Università Statale di Milano nel 1987.
Dopo una breve esperienza in una società informatica, nel 1988 decide di dedicarsi all’insegnamento, nel 1993 entra in ruolo e nel 1996 ottiene la cattedra di matematica e fisica in questo Liceo di San Donato.
Dal 1998 al 2000 ha seguito il marito ad Aberdeen in Scozia trasferito lì per motivi di lavoro, successivamente dal 2003 al 2006 al Cairo in Egitto. Queste esperienze le hanno dato la possibilità di approfondire la conoscenza della lingua inglese, infatti ad Aberdeen, ha frequentato per due anni corsi di Inglese ed ha insegnato Italiano ad un gruppo di adulti scozzesi.
Al Cairo, ha frequentato, come auditor, due corsi semestrali di fisica (equivalenti a Fisica I e Fisica II di tutte le facoltà scientifiche) presso l’American University of Cairo.
Nell’anno scolastico 2007/08 ritiene opportuno avviare nella sua classe di quinta liceo scientifico un progetto per presentare alcune lezioni di fisica (elettromagnetismo) in lingua inglese, progetto che ha avuto un riscontro positivo.
Katy Miller is an experienced ELT teacher and author having taught at the British Council and in various Italian contexts including the scuole primarie, secondarie and at university level. She has co-authored English language and Civiltà courses and is ELT/Editorial Consultant for Cambridge University Press (Italy).
Laura Bianchi
Insegnante di lingue straniere con esperienza pluriennale in diversi ordini di scuole, insegna attualmente inglese presso la Scuola Media De Gasperi-Galilei di S.Donato, dove organizza da anni corsi pomeridiani di preparazione all'esame Cambridge Esol KET e promuove spettacoli teatrali in lingua.
Ha partecipato in varie occasioni a scambi con scuole europee. Accompagna regolarmente studenti all'estero in viaggi d'istruzione e vacanze- studio.
