12.00 THE IMPORTANCE OF INTER-CULTURAL SENSITIVITY IN LANGUAGE LEARNING
Michael Carrier, Executive Director of International House World Organisation, talks about the importance of inter-cultural sensitivity in language learning.Many students are learning English not so they can go to UK or US, but so they can work with international colleagues and contacts. Thus, they need to learn not only about UK or US Culture, but also develop an international cross-cultural sensitivity and understanding along with their language skills.
Culture in the language classroom is not a matter of discussing US landmarks or UK history. To be a successful communicator in English in an international context, learners need to be aware of a broad range of cultural issues, references and knowledge.
It is important to distinguish, and teach learners to distinguish, the different issues of cultural reference (in texts and authentic learning materials), cultural awareness of the English-speaking countries, cultural literacy within language contexts, and inter-cultural sensitivity towards interlocutors from any cultural background.
This talk outlines some of the theories about culture and what constitutes inter-cultural awareness. It outlines what sorts of cultural input or activities we can bring to our learners to enhance their language learning.

“Il mondo in una classe: da problema a risorsa”
L’intervento prende spunto dall’esperienza di corsi di formazione per insegnanti delle scuole statali di ogni livello. La presenza sempre più numerosa di alunni stranieri in classe e nel sostegno fuori classe presenta difficoltà che richiedono competenze specifiche da parte degli insegnanti. E’ quindi opportuno suggerire soluzioni e strumenti concreti a partire da presentazione e discussione dei vari approcci all’insegnamento (metodologia comunicativa, ludica, cooperative learning ecc.), creazione di materiale didattico efficace, facilitazione dei testi curriculari. Parallelamente, sviluppare la sensibilità interculturale e fornire indicazioni per l’attuazione di progetti interculturali in ambito scolastico.
